The Rise of Cyber Crime: Home Office Strategies to Safeguard Data Centres

The Home Office is implementing new ransomware protections aimed at safeguarding data centres, public services, and other vital infrastructure, in response to the escalating threat posed by cybercrime.
Ransomware, a particularly pervasive form of cyberattack, has emerged as one of the most severe and consistent threats faced by both businesses and public entities. This growing menace has been exacerbated in recent years, especially with the surge of malicious activities linked to Russian-affiliated criminal groups, as highlighted by insights from the Home Office.
In an effort to fortify national infrastructure—most recently classified as critical by the government, including data centres—officials are seeking public input on proposals designed to mitigate the risks associated with ransomware attacks. Among the proposed measures is a ban on ransomware payouts by organisations classified as critical national infrastructure, building upon an existing prohibition against such payments by government departments.
Furthermore, the Home Office plans to establish a mandatory reporting framework for ransomware incidents, enabling law enforcement agencies to gather more intelligence and formulate effective responses.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasised the government’s commitment, stating, “Driving down cyber crime is central to this government’s mission to reduce crime, foster economic growth, and ensure the safety of the British public.”
The scale of the ransomware threat is underscored by staggering statistics; in 2023 alone, ransomware criminals globally amassed a record $1 billion in proceeds. The National Cyber Security Centre’s annual review for 2024 reported that the disruptions caused by ransomware attacks now pose a greater risk than other forms of cybercrime.
Recognising their pivotal role, data centres have been designated as critical national infrastructure by the government, placing them alongside essential services such as water, energy, and emergency services, and underscoring their importance within the broader framework of the government’s growth strategy.
