A Game-Changer for the Region: The Impact of the £250 Million Data Centre Green Light

A state-of-the-art data centre, representing a significant investment of £250 million, has received the green light for development at the Peel Waters Halo West site in Salford—an initiative that developers assert is vital for positioning the UK as a leader in technology. Spanning an impressive 10,000 square meters, this cutting-edge facility is part of a broader £250 million commitment to revitalising the city, driven by Digital Land and Development. The site, previously known as White’s Reclamation Site, is located strategically near the Salford Community Stadium, within an area earmarked for extensive regeneration.

On February 6, Salford Council approved the planning application for this transformative data centre, paving the way for construction to begin. Once operational, the facility is expected to create up to 20 new jobs, fostering economic opportunities with five to ten individuals likely to be employed on-site at any given time.

Data centres function as the backbone of the digital age, serving as secure repositories for vast amounts of online data utilised by websites, applications, and various digital services. Recognised by the government as ‘critical infrastructure,’ data centres are deemed as essential as energy and water systems, with their establishment anticipated to stimulate significant economic growth.

Councillor Mike McCusker, Salford’s planning lead, underscored the importance of this development, stating that the building will be ‘crucial for our economy and generating the growth we need,’ highlighting its role in fostering a thriving digital landscape for the region.
