Breaking New Ground: Iomart Sets the Standard with UK’s First Solar-Powered Data Centre

Iomart, a leading cloud services provider, has recently made an exciting sustainability-driven decision by installing state-of-the-art rooftop solar panels. These solar panels are set to power the company’s primary data centre, marking a significant step towards adopting green energy solutions.

Ionmart’s Maidenhead data centre now boasts an impressive 560 solar panels, which have the capability to produce approximately 250,000 kWh of energy annually. This initiative by ionmart is projected to prevent 96,061 kg of CO2 emissions each year.

David Gammie, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at iomart, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability in managing its extensive data centre portfolio across the UK. He highlighted the focus on ensuring the sustainability of the data centres, with a particular emphasis on the Maidenhead data centre. The ample roof space at the Maidenhead location provided an ideal opportunity for the effective installation of solar panels, furthering iomart’s sustainability initiatives.

Iomart is implementing a comprehensive strategy to ensure that all of its data centres are powered by 100% renewable energy, which will be sourced from wind, hydro, and solar technologies. This decision is driven by the increasing awareness of the environmental impact of data centres. Currently, data centres globally consume about 3% of the world’s total electricity, and this number is expected to increase significantly in the next decade due to the growing demands driven by technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Iomart is dedicated to investing in sustainable solutions, and the company is continuously working on improving its renewable energy capabilities to contribute to a greener future.
