Data Center emissions could be substantially reduced with the aid of an AI-driven heat monitoring system

IBM and NTT’s Japanese divisions have jointly announced the creation of an innovative AI-driven solution aimed at assisting data centre operators in monitoring server temperatures. This cutting-edge technology has the potential to not only accurately measure temperature but also optimize power consumption, thereby offering significant benefits to the industry.

Big Blue and NTT’s Comware integration division collaborated on a joint venture that involved utilizing a variety of sensors to gauge the amount of exhaust heat produced by the equipment at one of NTT’s data centres in Japan.

By inputting this data into an AI system, the corporations claim to have identified a “significant correlation” between the heat emitted by servers and their energy consumption. Consequently, this system can be utilized to compute the power usage and carbon dioxide emissions for various sections of a data centre.

The operational intricacies of the AI model have not been disclosed, however, the companies are diligently collaborating to transform the system into a marketable product that they can jointly promote to operators.

This could potentially provide a variety of advantages for data centre operators, as it enables the monitoring of server-generated heat without the need for any software or hardware reconfiguration.

Moreover, it is worth noting that the solution could potentially be utilized to regulate the air conditioning in various sections of the data centre by taking into account the precise amount of heat produced by different equipment. This innovative approach has the potential to significantly reduce electricity usage, resulting in cost savings and a decreased carbon footprint for the data centre.

Data centre operators face increasing pressure to reduce their power consumption in order to adhere to evolving regulatory frameworks and achieve sustainability goals.
