New Data Centre Rooftop Solar System In The Works

Equinix, a digital infrastructure company, has recently introduced a 1-megawatt (MW) solar rooftop power plant at its data centre located in the industrial outskirts of Melbourne.

Equinix’s on-site rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system, boasting over 2000 QCell panels, stands as the largest of its kind for the company and ranks among the largest in any Australian data centre.

According to Minister D’Ambrosio, the installation of the system marks a significant step toward Victoria achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. ”The one-megawatt system, coupled with our Victorian Energy Upgrades program (VUE) highlights how collectively governments, businesses, households and communities can contribute to the overarching goal of a more sustainable enviroment” D’Ambrosio said.

Equinix’s new rooftop solar system complements the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce energy costs and combat climate change. Supported by the Victorian government, Equinix completed rooftop solar installations to deliver 1.8 MW of clean energy into local power networks.

On top of this last month, Equinix also closed a power purchase agreement with Portuguese clean energy company TagEnergy to take 20 per cent of 151MW of the energy and green certificated generated from 756MW first stage of the mega project, from 2009.
