Navigating the Digital Landscape: Government Proposals for Data Center Zones
A forthcoming report commissioned by the government is poised to recommend the establishment of designated zones in the UK specifically for data centres, aiming to streamline the process of constructing these vital facilities. This initiative stems from a recent submission by Matt Clifford, entitled the “AI Opportunities Action Plan,” which was presented to the government last month and is anticipated to be released to the public in November.
In this comprehensive proposal, Clifford outlines a range of detailed suggestions designed to enhance the UK’s attractiveness to businesses focused on developing machine learning technologies. One of the key proposals includes the creation of specialised “computing zones.” These zones would facilitate the construction of data centres along with the necessary infrastructure, such as energy supply systems, in strategically designated areas across the country.
It is important to note that the plan remains in draft form and may undergo modifications before receiving governmental approval. A government spokesperson commented on the initiative, stating, “Matt Clifford’s AI Opportunities Action Plan will articulate an ambitious vision for how the UK can leverage technology to boost adoption across various sectors, invigorate economic growth, and cultivate a robust AI industry capable of thriving and competing on the international stage. We will communicate our response in due course.”
Since winning the UK election, the Labour Party has earmarked data centres as critical components of national infrastructure. This shift has also led to the reopening of planning proposals for data centres located in previously protected areas, including sections of the UK’s Green Belt, which had previously been denied.
